PADI Instructors Exam Information

Steve's Tips on your PADI Instructor's Exam
PADI IE - FAQs

Q: When will I find out what I will be teaching during the PADI IE?

A: The first hour of the PADI IE is an Orientation Session during which you are given all of your assignments for the whole of the PADI IE. So, you know up front what you are teaching in the class, pool and open water.

You'll know which 5 skills to demonstrate in the pool and whether your demonstration of a rescue is using a pocket mask or mouth to mouth.

Q: Will I have enough time to prepare myself for each teaching segment of the PADI IE?

A: Yes, there is plenty of time during a PADI IE when you are not being evaluated and you use this time for preparation.

It's up to you to manage your time effectively. Prepare for the next segment and if you have more spare time, prepare for the segment after next.

Q: Are the PADI Examiners going to spring any surpises on me to try to catch me out?

A: Definately not! During the Orientation Session, you will meet the PADI Examiners and realise that they are good guys, who are there to pass you unless of course, you persuade them otherwise.

The PADI Examiners try to keep the PADI IDC groups together if possible so you will most likely be working with the people who were on your PADI IDC with you. So it feels very familiar.

Give yourself the best chance by starting now - sign up for your Distance Learning Preparation Course.

It's important that you understand PADI Diving Theory and know how to use the PADI Standards and Procedures Manual so that you are confident of passing your exams at your first attempt.

In my experience of teaching PADI IDCs for over 10 years, this is where people fail the PADI IE - it seems that most people need more time to get this straight in their minds, so I offer to help them, before they even start their PADI IDC, by offering our Distance Learning Preparation Course.

Become a PADI Instructor - The PADI IE!

Let's take a look at just how easy it is to pass the PADI Instructor's Exam and become a PADI Scuba Diving Instructor...

Four Segments to the PADI IE

The exam is divided into four segments. Three of the segments involve an evaluation of your teaching ability; in the classroom, the confined water and the open water. The fourth segment involves a test of your understanding of Dive Theory and PADI Standards and Procedures.

You will be told your teaching topics and skills right at the start of the PADI IE so there's no surprises.

PADI Standards and Procedures Exam

You’ll have an hour and a half to answer 50 questions on PADI Standards and Procedures.

This is an open book exam so you can use either a digital or paper version of your PADI Instructor Manual to help you answer these questions.

PADI Dive Theory Exams

You will have a further hour and a half to answer 60 Dive Theory questions in these five subjects. Equipment, Physiology, Physics, RDP, Skills and the Environment.

There are only 12 questions on each subject. All of the answers are multi-choice, so a, b, c or d, AND you only have to score 75% or more to pass.

The examiner will mark your paper immediately and let you know your results.

Classroom Teaching

If, like everyone else you are dreading teaching to a packed classroom, there is some good news for you! The good news is that you will only be teaching for approx. 5 minutes to a small group of 5 or 6 people including the examiner.

As soon as you finish teaching the examiner will tell you if you have passed this segment of the PADI IE. You need to score at least a 3.5 out of 5 to pass but if you do mess up, you'll get another go!

Teaching in Confined Water and Skills Demonstrations

Another area where your teaching ability is evaluated is in confined water where you’ll have to teach just one skill and demonstrate 5 skills.

You will have to score at least 3.4 on your Confined Teaching Presentation and score a minimum of 17 points on your 5 skills demonstrations. If you mess up on either, you will get another go!

The examiner will tell you if you have passed as soon as you have finished teaching.

Teaching in Open Water

In Open Water- You’ll have to teach two skills and demonstrate Rescue exercise 7 - Unresponsive Diver on the Surface. In the unlikely event that you fail the rescue first time, you get a second go.

The two skills that you teach in Open Water are evaluated in a similar way as in the pool. You need to score an average 3.5 for both skills. You'll get your scores as soon as you have finished teaching.

Become a PADI Diving Instructor

When you pass all four segments – You become a PADI Diving Instructor!
